Cullen’s digital artworks play with the concept of formal slippage, stripped back forms that have their origin in landscape,
silhouette and shadow, accidental mark making and repeat pattern. Landscapes reimagined as visual abstracts that trigger, prompt or invoke interpretation, memory and meaning. The work reside in the accumulated experience, knowledge and practice of serigraphy. The hand cut, photo stenciled layered visual language of the screen print in digital form.
IN JESSICA HELFAND 2016 BOOK - THE INVENTION OF DESIRE, HELFAND WRITES ABOUT THE 1960S BRITISH EXPERIMENTAL FILMMAKER HOLLIS FRAMPTON – “ [Frampton] made a short silent film from the waste footage he found at the beginnings and ends of the rolls of processed film. Pieced together as a series of abstracted paintings, “Palindrome” is a visual celebration of the cryptic vernacular; its an important film in the avant-garde canon because, by liberating itself from the classic storytelling, the formal language engenders its own narrative – a series of kinetic Rorschach tests inviting viewers to interpret things as they choose.”
